What is PPE?

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) refers to equipment designed to protect workers from workplace hazards such as falls from height, falling objects, chemicals, heat, noise, and electrical hazards. PPE is considered the last line of defense after engineering and administrative controls have been implemented.

Types of PPE

The eight main categories of PPE are: Head Protection, Eye & Face Protection, Hearing Protection, Respiratory Protection, Hand Protection, Foot Protection, Body Protection, and Fall Protection.

How to Select PPE

PPE should be selected based on a risk assessment. It should protect against identified hazards, comply with international standards, be comfortable to wear, not interfere with work, fit the user properly, and be easy to inspect and maintain.

Safety Helmets

Safety helmets protect workers from impact and falling objects. Key selection criteria include ANSI or EN certification, electrical protection, suspension system, weight, and compatibility with accessories.

Safety Helmet Service Life

Helmet lifespan depends on materials, environment, and manufacturer recommendations. Generally, helmet shells last 3–5 years and suspension systems 1–2 years. Replace immediately if damaged.

Safety Glasses

Safety glasses protect against dust, debris, chemicals, and harmful radiation. Look for ANSI Z87.1 or EN166 certification, UV protection, anti-fog coating, and scratch resistance.

Safety Shoes

Safety footwear protects feet from impact and workplace hazards. Common standards include EN ISO 20345, ASTM F2413, CSA Z195, and AS/NZS 2210.

Working at Height

Working at height refers to any task where a fall could cause injury or death, including construction, maintenance, roofing, utility work, and industrial access.

Fall Protection

A complete fall protection system typically includes a Full Body Harness, Lanyard, Self-Retracting Lifeline (SRL), Anchor Point, and Lifeline System.

Full Body Harness

A harness distributes fall arrest forces across the body and is a critical component of a fall arrest system.

Selecting a Full Body Harness

Choose a harness that matches the application, meets ANSI/EN/CSA standards, fits correctly, and includes the required D-rings.

Harness Classes

Class A is designed for fall arrest, Class D for suspension and positioning work, and Class E for confined space and rescue applications.

Self-Retracting Lifeline (SRL)

SRLs automatically extend and retract while locking instantly during a fall, reducing free-fall distance and impact forces.

Lanyards

Lanyards connect the harness to an anchor point. Types include Shock Absorbing, Restraint, Positioning, and Twin Lanyards.

Anchor Points

Anchor points are load-rated attachment points designed to withstand fall arrest forces and must be installed by competent personnel.

Lifeline Systems

Lifeline systems connect workers to anchor points and may be designed as horizontal or vertical systems.

Horizontal Lifeline (HLL)

HLL systems allow continuous movement along a horizontal path without disconnecting from fall protection equipment.

Vertical Lifeline (VLL)

VLL systems are commonly installed on ladders, towers, chimneys, and utility structures to provide vertical fall protection.

Rescue Plans

Every work-at-height and confined-space operation should have a documented rescue plan covering emergency response procedures, equipment, and responsibilities.

Suspension Trauma

Suspension Trauma occurs when a worker remains suspended in a harness after a fall. Immediate rescue is critical to prevent serious injury or death.

Tripods

Tripods provide overhead anchorage for confined space access, rescue, and retrieval operations.

Confined Space

Confined spaces are areas with limited entry and exit, poor ventilation, and potential atmospheric hazards.

Gas Detectors

Gas detectors monitor atmospheric conditions including oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and combustible gases.

Fire Helmets
